Based in Berlin, pianist Martin Terens was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1985. He started playing classical music on the piano at the age of eight, and throughout his time in high school, Martin also learned how to play the violin, organ, and the bass. As a classical pianist, he received several awards and won competitions, such as the 1st prizes for composition and piano accompaniment at the German federal music contests Jugend Musiziert in 2003 and Jugend Komponiert in 2004.

It was not until he turned 18 that Martin began to explore the infinite world of jazz. With this turning point in mind, he received his Diploma (German Bachelor of Music) in 2012 with honors from the Hochschule für Musik & Theater in Hamburg, Germany. During this time at the undergraduate jazz program, Martin received awards with his quartet at the Jugend Jazzt competition in Germany in 2005 and won the International Jazz Haus Piano Competition in Freiburg, Germany, in 2009. He also participated in the semi-finals at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition in 2010 and 2012.

In August of 2012, after spending nine months abroad at the Conservatorio Lucino Refice in Frosinone, Italy, with the Inter-European exchange program ERASMUS, Martin received a scholarship from the German-American Fulbright commission. This grant enabled him to start the Master’s program at City College in New York. While currently in his last semester of the graduate jazz program, Martin is furthermore employed as an Adjunct Lecturer at CCNY. As part of an Artist-In-Residence fellowship, he is also hosting a bi-weekly open jazz night at the International House New York. Most recently in 2014, Martin received a Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award from ASCAP.

Martin released his debut album Morn & Eve in 2012 on his own record label, M.A.T. Acoustics. Shortly after, he published Trio Collage’s debut album Conclusion in 2013 on M.A.T. Acoustics. Up to present, Martin has shared the stage with several internationally acclaimed musicians, such as Joel Frahm, Lucas Lindholm, Bill Ramsey, Dusko Goykovitch, Georgie Fame, Torsten Goods, and the NDR Big Band. Martin has performed in Italy, Lebanon, the Netherlands, Poland, Estonia, Yemen, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, and the United States.
